REFERENCE: The Tangier International Zone (1912-1956) is one of the few world territories that, due to its most important strategic location, had a special status. The city of Tangier at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar and the adjacent territory with a total area of 373 km ² and a population of 40 thousand people, as well as the adjacent water space of about 7 km ² had an "international status," in fact, it was a joint possession of several European colonial powers that failed to agree on the ownership of this territory.
