During World War I, the armed forces of the colony (consisting of 3 thousand Europeans and 11 thousand natives) were led by Colonel von Lettov-Forbeck, who from 1914 to 1918 successfully fought against the British and Portuguese colonial forces. Later, he was forced to retreat due to the offensive from the Belgian Congo and lack of resources. With a small detachment, von Lettow-Forbeck advanced to the territory of Mozambique and northern Rhodesia, where, having learned about the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Entente countries, he ordered a ceasefire. The First World War was over (November 1918), and he thus became the commander of the only armed formation in colonial Germany that did not surrender to the enemy. Under the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919, the territory of German East Africa was divided: the western part went to Belgium (Rwanda-Urundi), a small section in the south became part of Portuguese Mozambique, and the rest was transferred to the possession of Britain, which renamed the colony Tanganyika. The latter gained independence in 1961. Wiki
